PLEASURECRAFT SPONSORS UNIVERSITY TEAM IN SOLAR BOAT DESIGN COMPETITION

LITTLE MOUNTAIN, SC (March 3, 2016) – Pleasurecraft Engine Group (PEG) is sponsoring a team of University of South Carolina (USC) mechanical engineers as they prepare to enter Solar Splash, the World Championship of intercollegiate solar/electric boating, to be held June 15-19 in Dayton, Ohio.

Since 1994, university teams from across the globe have designed and built prototype solar/electric boats for competition in Solar Splash. Each team’s boat goes through technical inspections followed by five on-the-water competitive events. Points are earned in 7 categories to determine an overall champion. USC’s teams have earned eight top 5 finishes including three World Championship titles.

“Our project coincides with a two-semester long class encompassing the entire design process,” stated Carver Buis, USC team member and PEG intern. “We evaluated last year’s USC team design along with their competitors to identify weak areas in need of improvement. The technical knowledge and design advice, in addition to the financial support, we receive from PEG is invaluable in our quest to bring home a fourth World Championship.”

PEG President Mark McKinney added, “Pleasurecraft is always looking to support our community and when we were approached with this opportunity we knew it was a perfect fit. Fostering the next generation of engineers in our industry while supporting the local university has been an incredible experience that we hope to continue for years to come.”

Direct Injection: Feel the Rhythm

Place your hand on your heart. Seriously, stop reading this and place your hand on your heart.

Do you feel the rhythmic beat of your heart, powerfully pounding blood through your body? Your heart, as small as it may be compared to the rest of your body, is the driving force that powers you through your day, week, and lifetime.

An engine is just like a heart. Though small, compared to the boat it powers, the engine is the most important feature. Without a smooth-running engine, the boat is useless.

At PCM we believe that the engine needs to be of the highest quality and manufactured to last. Just as athletes train their hearts to withstand the most grueling workouts, we design and engineer our engines to stand above the competition. A PCM engine performs without hesitation and is charged with the latest technologies and features that deliver incomparable enjoyment and reliability.

With this in mind, we’ve spent countless hours researching ways to develop the next great engine to power inboard towsport boats. Built on the idea of HYPERFORMANCE; the serious, obsessive — borderline fanatical — approach and philosophy to building an engine that outperforms the competition in every way – our newest class of engines are the industry’s most innovative engines available.

In September of 2015, we launched the H5DI and H6DI engines. These engines feature the only direct injection fuel system in the inboard towsports industry. They were designed to propel – literally and figuratively – watersports enthusiasts beyond the reach of the competition and allow them to soar to new heights.

These engines are set apart from the competition by implementing the next generation technology of Direct Injection. Take a look and you’ll see why we have been the industry leader for so many years.

Direct Injection Technology

Essentially, Direct Injection Technology, provides more power and greater efficiency from smaller displacement engines, meaning a great pull just got even better while costing you less at the pump.  All of this is achieved by:

  • Moving the point where fuel feeds into an engine closer to the point where it ignites, enabling greater combustion efficiency
  • A leaner mixture, so less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower of a conventional, port injection fuel system
  • Higher compression ratios that produce more power
  • A more complete burn of the fuel in the air-fuel mixture
  • Operating at a lower temperature than conventional port injection

In addition to this latest technology, the H5DI and H6DI feature our Catanium® Clean Emission System Gen 2, which reduces harmful emissions and dangerous carbon monoxide to create a cleaner, safer marine environment while optimizing performance. A custom-tuned intake manifold ensures optimal torque while the all-aluminum construction of the block, heads and exhaust system allow for the utilization of an open-loop cooling system. This system is the most effective, reliable, and maintenance-free system in the marine industry and backed by the strongest 5-year buyer protection plan, Hypertection.

Of course, no PCM engine would be complete without all the exclusive features made famous by our earlier generation engines. Like what you see? Are you interested in taking your boating to the next level? Talk to your local dealer to learn how you can start experiencing HYPERFORMANCE.

Remember, it’s important not to forget about your boat’s engine, because just like a strong heart powers some of the greatest athletes, you deserve a strong engine to power your passion!

Wakeboarding vs. Wakesurfing

How many of the water sport veterans remember the days when all you saw were water-skiers out on the water?

Yep, that was a long time ago. Head out on the water today and you’ll see skiers, boarders, tubers and surfers.

With the influx of riding styles on lakes today, it’s easy to see how the watersports industry has evolved during the last five decades.

When people were first hitting the water back in the day, you mostly saw skiers. As technology advanced, watersports enthusiasts began experimenting to find new ways to fuel an adrenaline rush.

Enter wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

Fast-forward twenty years and more and more people are trading in their water skis for boards. Just look at the popularity of events such as the Wakeboard World Series and the growing number of young riders at wakeparks, and you can easily see this evolution occurring.

If you are a water sports junkie, the differences between wakeboarding and wakesurfing may be as apparent as land and water, but if you are new to the world of watersports and are in search of the next big wave of excitement, you’ll want to know the differences between the two before you head out on the lake.

Here is what you need to know…

First, whereas water skiing allows a rider to sail smoothly across the water, wakeboarding and wakesurfing utilize wakes and waves for a ride similar to snowboarding or surfing.

There are a couple of key fundamental differences between wakeboarding and wakesurfing to note – the first being the way a rider stands on the board. On a wakeboard, riders strap their feet into boots connected to the board, similar to snowboarding. On the flip side, wakesurfers ride as if they are on a surfboard, freely standing.

Additionally, like skiing, wakeboarders hold onto a rope, connected to the boat all the time. Wakesurfing does not require the rider hold onto a rope all the time. Like wakeboarding, wake surfers grasp a rope to stand up on the board, but upon gaining body control and balance on the board, the rider releases the rope and begins to surf the boat-made waves. If you are struggling to get up on the water, check out this valuable resource from USA Water Ski.

By strapping into a wakeboard, riders can stay connected to the board while performing aerial tricks. Since wakeboarders ride holding onto a rope, they can reach faster speeds and launch their boards over wakes to reach breathtaking heights.

For skateboarders looking to try their hand at another sport, wakesurfing might be for you. Boating Magazine touched on the trick styles of the two watersports, and noted that skate boarding tricks cross over to wakesurfing very easily. If you are already performing tricks like kickflips and shuvits on land, you’ll probably find those tricks easier to master on the water than one who has never skated.

While surfers can only ride a wave in the ocean until it breaks, wakesurfers can ride for extended periods of time due to the constant wake created by the boat. With waves constantly coming your way, you can do things like play a guitar while you surf – like this guy.

In addition to the riding style, wake surfboards are typically longer than a wakeboard, measuring four to five feet in length. Styles range from skim-style boards, which are shorter than wakeboards, and the longer surf-style boards, which are better for beginners. New riders can check out some great information provided by Wakeboarding Magazine on guidelines to consider when choosing a wakeboard or wakesurfer.

One other important note is the type of boat used for both styles. Unlike tubing where a simple motorboat can be used, wakeboarding and wakesurfing require a specially designed boat. These boats feature inboard engines that create the wake and are specifically weighted for optimal wake conditions.

For safety purposes, wakesurfing requires an inboard boat where the propeller is under the boat and a greater distance from the rider. The right boat and engine can go a long way in determining one’s success in the sport. If you are in the market for a tow boat, check out what Centurion and Nautique have to offer.

The evolution of water sports would not be possible without the advancements in technology and innovations in boat and engine design. We here at PCM are determined to continue to deliver innovative products that will launch watersports to greater heights.

Our recent launch of our HYPERFORMANCE engines reflects our desire to produce industry-leading products aimed at propelling watersports forward. As we, and others in the industry, continue to develop new technology, who knows what we’ll be riding across the water on, or behind, 50 years from now.

40 years

In February of 1975, Paul Fletcher left his job as a marine engine distributor, and with the help of his friend Tom Scott, created Pleasurecraft Marine Engine Company (PCM) in Canal Winchester, Ohio  –  embarking on a journey to transform inboard engines.

A few months later Paul and Tom were joined by Chuck Thurman, who would take over the operation side of the business, while Paul focused on the design and creation of the ultimate inboard engine.

While examining the climate of the water sports industry, the PCM brain trust noted the growing ski boat market – the fastest-growing market in the 1970s – due to the rise of water skiing and water sports, and honed in on designing a specialized inboard engine.

PCM achieved its goal soon thereafter, striking a deal with Correct Craft Boats (now Nautique Boats). During the ‘70’s, Correct Craft Boats was the premier builder of inboard ski boats featuring the Ski Nautique model.

Back then, water skiing was the most popular water sport and the powerful Ski Nautique was the most sought after boat in the industry. Paul and the rest of the PCM crew designed an inboard engine specifically for the Ski Nautique, and by the early 80’s, PCM and Correct Craft struck a deal for PCM to become the exclusive engine used in Correct Craft water sport boats. With the new deal, the PCM gang foresaw substantial growth coming and began exploring options to expand their operation to better serve their growing customer base.

In 1984, PCM expanded to Little Mountain, South Carolina. By expanding south, PCM moved closer to its primary market and settled into an area more ideal for manufacturing and distributing products. With the Charleston port just hours away, importing and exporting of parts and engines became a more efficient process.

As the years went by, PCM was manufacturing in both Ohio and South Carolina, while consistently engineering and designing new and innovative inboard engines. While this rapid expansion was taking place, the name PCM became synonymous with water sports. Over time, wake boarding and other facets of the sport began to take center stage in the industry, and more and more tournaments across the country began choosing PCM as the exclusive tow power for their competitions. Over the years, PCM has been the exclusive power behind the Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament, Wake Games, WWA Nationals, and the World Wake Surf Championships.

As the mid 2000’s arrived PCM continued to rock n’ roll, consistently earning the highest ratings for quality and customer satisfaction in the inboard engine industry by a leading market research team. PCM has continued to prove itself as the leader in the marine propulsion industry, consistently raising the standard and designing innovative engines to remain on the leading edge.

In 2008, PCM consolidated its operation and moved the entire company to the Little Mountain location. This facility, a 140,000 square foot complex on 27 acres, encompasses PCM’s corporate headquarters, engineering and R&D facilities, manufacturing, and parts distribution facilities. The team continued to develop and re-engineer its engines, while securing a number of U.S. patents for components of the industry-leading engines.

Fourty years since Paul started PCM, his vision and goal to transform the water sports industry is still alive and today’s management team continues to embrace and expand on that vision. At PCM, we understand that in the end, every detail matters, and this fall, we will continue to lead the industry in innovative technology.

Very soon we will once again transform inboard engines with the release of a powerful brand new class of engine that will propel water sports to new heights.

Why do we do it? Why do we spend countless hours trying to come up with a new design? We do it because of the vision that was started in 1975 – to build for our customers the ultimate water sports engine.
